Hi!

What are the most common audit red flags to avoid?

Easy list! We know this in detail working as tax practitioners.
By the way, we also have a resolution team with an unparalleled
success rate, so if you do receive an IRS letter, audit, or
assessment, just let us know.

Anyway, here are the main audit triggers we have seen in the last
18 months:

Schedule C businesses

* This includes Single-Member LLCs, sole proprietorships,
contractors, freelancers, anyone with a 1099-NEC of any size
* You are common targets but more specifically, the following
line items tend to raise IRS eyebrows: automotive expenses,
meals/entertainment, rent of any kind [studio, cars, etc.],
travel, and luxury goods (sorry influencers, content creators,
and others needing luxury props)
* If you show a loss more than one year, or if your loss is of a
material amount, be prepared
* The IRS uses data from all prior taxpayers to =E2=80=9Ctest=E2=80=9D your
return - if you have an expense type that is far higher than
historical average for that particular line item as compared to
an average business in your industry, that is a red flag

Mortgage deductions in excess of the limit =F0=9F=8F=A1

* For those of us with mortgages over the limit ($750k since
2018, one million before), the IRS has been cracking down on the
full mortgage interest deduction.
* If your mortgage is over this amount, please double check your
schedule A worksheets to ensure you applied the limitation.
Otherwise, this is an audit red flag lately.

Taking real estate losses against W2-income

* Even if you or your spouse qualify as actively involved in real
estate & as a qualified real estate professional, the IRS loves
to scrutinize these - be ready with your proof
* Cost segregation, short-term rentals, accelerated depreciation,
bonus depreciation, and other strategies that have been common in
social media lately tend to be targeted, even if you qualify, so
be ready with your documentation

State residency audits =F0=9F=97=BA=EF=B8=8F

* If you have any W2, 1099, or other tax form that has your
address listed in a state that you did not live, there is a risk
that you may have an issue with that state. Filing a non-resident
return may not work in all cases - there are other proactive
steps to protect yourself from a state residency audit.
* If you think there may be any possibility whatsoever of any
form or income source being associated with a state that you are
no longer in, let us know right away so we can go over corrective
actions to prevent issues at year-end.

Conclusion

If you want us to review a current or prior year return to
determine where it sits on the =E2=80=9Caudit scale,=E2=80=9D or if you nee=
d a
general planning call to go over how examinations work & what you
need to do to protect yourself, just hit =E2=80=9Creply=E2=80=9D and we wil=
l
address right away for you.
