Hi!

Whatever you are doing now, please kindly stop and check your pay
stub for the following issue:

Withholding for the wrong state

We see at least one situation weekly where a taxpayer paid to the
wrong state all year - sometimes in the amount of tens or even
hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Some common examples:

* Taxpayer moves to no-tax state, such as TX or WA, but continues
to pay tax to former state
* Taxpayer moves states but continues to pay tax to the prior
state, causing a confusing tax return at year end and possible
underpayments
* The list goes on, but you get the idea

When you move, it is common that your payroll department may not
make the change. Sometimes, a refund after-the-fact may be
difficult or impossible, depending on the state.

This is why it is critical that you check them now to ensure that
you are not paying tax to the wrong state, with the possibility
of a tough refund process, if any.

Other related issues:

* Withholding for the wrong city. We have seen situations where a
client is paying New York City or Philadelphia City Tax months
[as examples] - long after they moved!
* Overpaid 401ks, double paid HSAs, etc. - when you change jobs,
make sure you are not contributing above the annual limit for
these

In short, take a look at your pay stubs, check that all the
withholdings make sense, not just the state. Make sure you can
explain & understand every line item on your stub.

There are cases where the employer may refuse to change the
withholding, and others where they are not sure what they are
permitted to do.

If you have any confusion about this, now is the time to reach
out while you still have the time to make modifications early in
the year.
